Amsterdam University Sustains Heavy Costs due to Student Occupation

Frank van Vree, Dean of the Humanities Faculty, has written that the eleven days during which students occupied the Bunge House, a building of the Amsterdam University, has cost the university a substantial amount of money.  These sums would have been enough to pay several staff members’ yearly salaries.  Among the costs, Van Vree mentioned vandalized toilets, lost income from third parties, the costs of failed research projects, extra security and cleaning, as well as the replacement of the locks on the Bunge House and other university buildings.  There were also the costs of the mobile police unit, which had to evacuate the students.
